Washington County lies in the southern Champlain Basin, a place of rolling farmlands with views that stretch from the Green Mountains of Vermont on its eastern border to the Adirondack Mountains which rise on the far side of Lake George to the west. Local communities include Fort Ann (farm country with Lake George lakefront and a sprinkling of antique shops and lesser lakes such as Hadlock and Copeland Ponds), Whitehall (where the U.S. Navy was founded), and Hudson Falls as well as areas well-known to Lake George residents, yet almost too small to even be regarded as hamlets - areas such as Katskill Bay, Pilot Knob, Dresden, Huletts Landing and Putnam.
